Plot Synopsis[]
Citizen Z is standing over a barrel fire, burning documents while trying to contact Operation Bitemark to tell them that they need to abandon the mission. With no answer, his last battery dies, after which he tosses the headset and everything else into the flames and walks away, commenting about how "all good things must come to an end."
Back in California, Roberta and Vasquez are inside the Restaurant & Lounge, talking with Auntie, the proprietor of the place. After having checked out the place, Roberta waves for Doc, Addy, 10K, and Murphy to come inside. Everyone makes their way inside, Murphy hidden under a costume of women's clothes. They talk about what's going on in the country with Auntie. Just as she asks them why they're in California, they hear a car pull up. It's a group of bounty hunters.
The bounty hunters come in and tell Auntie that they heard she's the one to talk to about "The Murphy". They have a zombie that they claim is Murphy and suggest a round of drinks for everyone since they're going to claim their reward and want to celebrate. Murphy is sitting in a booth when one of the bounty hunters tries to hit on him and asks him to dance. Murphy tries to wave him away without speaking, but the zombie they have mimics his actions, leading the main guy to get suspicious. He demands that Murphy remove the scarf from his face because his fake Murphy zombie keeps echoing his movements. The bounty hunter holds his gun on Murphy, and everyone pulls their guns on the people in the other group.
Murphy stands up and uncovers his face. Just as the main bounty hunter demands Murphy take off the dress he's wearing to look for bites, their fake Murphy zombie attacks the bounty hunter, biting him. The rest of our survivors take the chance to shoot all of the bounty hunters' group. As soon as the shooting stops, 10K asks for help. They find him on the floor, bleeding from a gunshot wound in the stomach.
While Doc tries to help 10K, Auntie verifies that he actually is Murphy. She goes outside and fires off a flair to contact the CDC, which turns out to be based on a submarine.
Up at Camp Northern Light, Citizen Z loads up a dogsled with Pup and supplies. He puts on a harness and starts to pull the sled.
In California, two military men show up to take Murphy to the sub. Captain Matheson has Dr. Merch come in to verify Murphy's identity. At first, she says she doesn't recognize him, but when he screams the same words about eating her brains as he did the last time they saw one another, she confirms that it's him. The military crew gather 10K and load him in one of the vehicles while Murphy says goodbye to everyone. Doc insists on hugging him. Before Roberta will let them take him, she makes sure that they are going to treat him like a human being, since he is one. They assure her that he will be treated respectfully, and she pats him on the cheek.
The CDC departs and the group goes inside to help Auntie clean out the dead bodies. On their last trip with the bodies, someone fires guns at them. The team takes cover behind some cars. Vasquez looks over the car and tells them it's the Zeros, led by a now completely crazed La Reina. They are pinned down until Auntie comes up behind them and covers them with her machine gun. They rush inside and do a weapons check, only to realize they are almost out of ammo. Auntie pulls a lever, and a rack of guns comes down behind the counter. They all load up and try to prepare for the Zeros' attack.
On the submarine, Murphy learns that the crew belongs to a society, mostly made up of billionaires and former world leaders, currently living on a zombie-free island called Zona. Murphy notices that everyone on the sub has weird glowing eyes. Dr. Merch explains that it's a side effect of the first vaccine, which only slows down the effects of the virus. It's also currently failing and slowly turning everyone into zombies. Murphy is strapped down and Dr. Merch starts asking him medical questions. He acts embarrassed and requests she get rid of the two soldiers in the room. As soon as they leave, Dr. Merch turns around to find Murphy standing right in front of her. He tells her that he's not going to cure a bunch of rich people and tells her he's going to do something he should have done a long time ago.
Meanwhile, there's a big shootout at Auntie's restaurant, during which Auntie turns Z and Doc gives her mercy. Addy battles a man with a staff and her Z-Whacker is broken completely in half. She uses the spiked broken top part to stab the guy fighting her in the groin, which gives Roberta a chance to shoot him in the head. La Reina arrives and she and Roberta fight until, just before La Reina is about to kill Roberta, Escorpion stabs her in the neck from behind.
Back up in the North Pole, Citizen Z struggles to pull the sled forward. He stops, staring straight ahead with frost covering his face, unable to go any further.
Escorpion apologizes to Vasquez for murdering his family, saying he can have his vengeance if he wants it. However, he also wants him to know that Escorpion died when they threw him down into the zombies. He, as Hector, wants to try to make up for all of the atrocities Escorpion committed. Vasquez spares Escorpion's life, after which he says goodbye to Roberta and runs off into the woods.
As they are walking towards the beach, Roberta, Doc, and Addy are stopped by Hector. He offers to let them join him. He's got enough food, water, ammo and Z-Weed to last a month. They agree to go with Addy, telling Roberta, "If we need to, we kill him and take the truck." When the group arrive at the beach, they find that the submarine is sinking. Looking through a scope, Roberta sees that Murphy has escaped the submarine and is now racing toward the shore on a speedboat with Dr. Merch, Captain Matheson, and a few soldiers. However, neither she, nor Doc, are able to see 10K on the boat.
Just then, two jets fly overhead, and Doc says they're not American. Suddenly the team is surrounded by Chinese soldiers. On the speedboat, Dr. Merch and Captain Matheson both have Murphy bites on their cheeks, while Murphy determinedly drives the boat with a hard look on his face.
In the North Pole, Citizen Z stands nearly fully frozen as someone approaches him in a heavy coat.
Murphy's young daughter Lucy is shown having a tea party with zombies, grown quickly to the size of a four or five year old child. When one of the zombies drops his teacup, she tells him "Bad Zombie", while continuing to giggle.
