Edgemont, South Dakota is a town featured in Z Nation, first encountered in episode 10 "Going Nuclear".
Background[]
Edgemont is a small town located in Fall River County, South Dakota in the Black Hills. Outside of town is Edgemont Nuclear Power Plant. Located in the southwestern part of the state. Originally founded as a railroad town in the late 19th century, it was a quiet rural community with a population of just a few hundred residents. The town serves as a gateway to the scenic Black Hills region and is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, hunting, and fishing. Edgemont also marks the southern terminus of the Mickelson Trail, a popular 109-mile rail-trail for biking and hiking. The local economy was supported by agriculture, rail transportation, and tourism.
Post Apocalypse[]
After the outbreak, many residents and workers at the power plant are zombified. By the time the Westward-bound survivor group comes to town, there are only three residents left.
When they arrive they are saved by the Grady Family of Amelia and Wilbur who have been keeping the Nuclear Planet under wraps. Wilbur was an engineer at the plant and helped take care of it years into the apocalypse. Homer Stubbins being the other citizen of Edgemont was the chief engineer of the plant for 20 years and lived in a cabin on the outskirts of the town.
Homer takes 10K into the reactor and discovers that something is blocking the rods from falling, so they send in a remote-controlled wheeled robot named Robbie to do the trick, which fails pretty abysmally once the zombies get a hold of it.
Homer and 10K manage to shut down the reactor, after which Homer tells his young friend to kill him. 10K can't bring himself to shoot Homer, so the old man makes it easier on him by dropping himself into the pool and dies.
However, a reactor is threatening to contaminate a 300-mile radius when it melts down in the next 48 hours. Amelia promises to fly out Murphy in a small airplane if things totally go south. They run through and kill a ton of zombies, get Wilbur into a working elevator, and flee the scene. Shortly thereafter, Wilbur returns from the plant, unsuccessful in his attempt to shut down the reactor.
Amelia worked with her father to shut down the critical reactor in the Edgemont Nuclear Power Plant. She and her father saved the Westward-Bound Survivor Group from a bunch of radioactive zombies when they stumbled into the power plant. Amelia joined them when they tried to shut down the damaged reactor, which resulted in her fathers death.
The group outside the plant as Wilbur Grady explains the situation.
She lead the heroes to meet Homer Stubbins and helped convince him to attempt to shut down the reactor. With the threat of imminent meltdown, and while Homer and a majority of the heroes tried to save the reactor, Amelia, Murphy and Warren got her single-engine plane flight worthy. They used Homer's supply of vodka as aviation fuel and Warren converted the engine to burn alcohol.
